The Premier League has explained why Evanilson’s second-half goal for Bournemouth was allowed to stand in their 2-1 win against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Arsenal had taken the lead through Declan Rice in the first half, but the visitors fought back. Dean Huijsen scored the equaliser in the 67th minute, and Evanilson scored the winner just eight minutes later.

However, Evanilson’s goal sparked debate, as replays appeared to show the ball touching his elbow before he scored from close range.

After a long video assistant referee review, the goal was given. Many Arsenal fans and football followers questioned the decision.

In a statement posted on its official X handle, the Premier League said: “The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with no conclusive evidence that Evanilson handled the ball before scoring.”

Football pundit and former Liverpool player, Jamie Redknapp, also supported the decision during his appearance on Sky Sports.

“Is there enough evidence to overturn that? I would say absolutely not,” Redknapp said.

The result was a big blow to Arsenal, who are in a tight title race and could not afford to drop points at home.
