Manchester United have now lost 15 matches in the Premier League this season after a 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Pablo Sarabia came off the bench and scored the winning goal in the 77th minute with a brilliant free-kick. It was his first touch of the game, and it gave Wolves their fifth straight top-flight win — something they last achieved in 1970.
The Red Devils had just celebrated a Europa League win over Lyon on Thursday but could not keep the momentum going in front of over 73,000 home fans.
United had more of the ball and created several chances, especially in the second half, but they could not break through Wolves’ defence. Alejandro Garnacho, Mason Mount, and Bruno Fernandes all had good chances, but none could find the net.
Mount came close in the 83rd minute after a low cross from Garnacho, but his shot flew over the bar. Earlier, Rasmus Hojlund almost connected with a cross across goal, but just missed it at the back post.
Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa and defender Emmanuel Agbadou were solid, stopping most of United’s attacks. Christian Eriksen was booked for a foul that led to the free-kick Sarabia converted.
After the match, United’s manager Ruben Amorim looked disappointed as his team failed to score again. They now face a difficult trip to Bournemouth next Sunday.
Wolves, managed by Vitor Pereira, are enjoying one of their best runs in the Premier League in decades. The win puts them in a strong position heading into the final weeks of the season.
Sarabia, who was named man of the match, said after the game, “It was a very important win for us. I just wanted to help the team when I came on, and I’m happy the free-kick went in.”
For United, this season continues to be frustrating. With only a few games left, fans are hoping the team can finish on a stronger note.
