A violent clash between herdsmen and youths in Lano village, Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, has resulted in the death of one person and left two others hospitalised.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, was confirmed in a statement by the Gombe State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Buhari Abdullahi.
The conflict reportedly began when youths from Lano village barricaded the Lano-Deba Road and allegedly attacked Fulani herdsmen crossing from Kuri village. The attack led to the killing of five cows belonging to the herdsmen.
According to sources, the youths accused the herdsmen of harassing local farmers by seizing their phones and obstructing the transportation of farm produce.
ASP Abdullahi stated, “We received information that a group of youths from Lano village barricaded the Lano-Deba Road and attacked Fulani herdsmen, killing five of their cows. Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the scene to contain the situation.
“Despite police intervention, some of the youths pursued the herdsmen into the bush, resulting in a violent altercation. Three individuals were injured during the clash after being shot with bows and arrows.”
The victims were rushed to the General Hospital in Deba for treatment but were later referred to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe. Unfortunately, one of the victims succumbed to stomach injuries, while the other two remain hospitalised.
The police spokesperson assured residents that calm had been restored, with security personnel and vigilantes patrolling the area to ensure the safety of villagers, herdsmen, and road users.
“The situation is under control, and we urge all parties to maintain peace and refrain from further violence,” Abdullahi said.
