A tragic road crash has claimed the lives of 12 people along the Bayamari-Geidam road in Yobe State.

The victims included ten men, one woman, and a young girl, all burned beyond recognition in the accident.

The Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander in Yobe State, Corps Commander Livinus Yilzoom, confirmed the incident in a press release on Wednesday.

According to Yilzoom, the crash happened around 10:00 pm on Tuesday at Kilometer 20, Chelluri village, along the Bayamari-Geidam road.

The accident involved a stationary Howo truck, with registration number MAG 831 ZR, belonging to Dan Nene Construction Company, and a Sharon mini bus with registration number BAU 124 YF. The bus, which was carrying 12 passengers, crashed into the truck and caught fire.

Yilzoom explained that a preliminary investigation identified the stationary truck’s road obstruction as the immediate cause of the accident. He also highlighted excessive speed and overloading by the driver of the Sharon bus as contributing factors.

“The crash resulted from a combination of road obstruction by the Howo truck and reckless driving by the Sharon bus driver,” Yilzoom said.

The Sector Commander advised motorists to avoid traveling at night, especially during the harmattan season, which reduces visibility due to haze.

“Motorists must understand that night travel is risky, particularly now with the poor visibility caused by harmattan,” he said.

He also urged drivers to strictly follow traffic rules to prevent such devastating accidents.

The FRSC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer roads while calling on road users to prioritize safety at all times.
