The Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council, Mr. Christopher Maikalangu, has expressed concern over the improper disposal of waste by residents into drainage systems.
He warned that the council will soon begin to impose fines on those caught dumping trash in drainages.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting several projects in the council area on Wednesday, Maikalangu criticized the behavior, saying it leads to flooding and blocks the free flow of water. “I can’t see reasons why people bring trash from their houses to dump into the flood drains. This is wrong, and it is the cause of water overflowing onto the roads,” he said.
Maikalangu stressed that these drainage facilities are meant to ensure proper water flow and should not be used for waste disposal. He added, “We have been warning the people against it, and soon we will start imposing fines.”
He also instructed contractors working on local projects to remove any trash from the drains immediately to prevent flooding.
The AMAC boss hopes the sanctions will serve as a deterrent to others and encourage proper waste disposal in Abuja.
