A private institution in Nigeria, Covenant University, has been ranked as the country’s best university in the 2024 Times Higher Education Rankings.
THE Rankings, an annual assessment of global universities, is one of the most comprehensive evaluations in higher education.
The 2024 edition includes data from 1,907 universities across 108 countries and regions. The ranking system uses 18 performance indicators to evaluate institutions in areas such as teaching, research environment, research quality, industry connections, and international outlook.
For this year’s rankings, THE analysed over 134 million citations from 16.5 million research publications, and gathered survey responses from 68,402 scholars worldwide. Data from 2,673 institutions was submitted, contributing to a total of 411,789 data points used for evaluation.
On the global scale, the University of Oxford in the UK retained its position as the top university for the ninth consecutive year, making it the longest reign in THE Rankings history, surpassing Harvard University’s eight-year streak, which ended in 2011.
Meanwhile, Stanford University in the United States climbed to second place, pushing Harvard down to fourth. The University of Cambridge, also in the UK, dropped from joint third place in 2023 to fifth in 2024.
Covenant University’s performance as Nigeria’s top university in the global rankings reflects its continued focus on academic excellence and research output.

Nigeria’s highest-ranking institution on the 2024 list is Covenant University which fell within the 800-1000 global scale alongside the University of Ibadan.
