Don seeks national re-orientation to stop incessant rape

Published

A former Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Ota, Prof. Charles Ayo, on Tuesday, called on government at all levels to embark on national re-orientation in order to stop incessant incidents of rape in the country.

Ayo, who is also the Vice-Chancellor, Trinity University, Yaba, gave the advice while speaking to newsmen in Ota.

He spoke on the background of incessant rape cases and particularly the raping of an undergraduate student of the University of Benin on May 27.

According to him, the increasing rape cases in the country are really unfortunate and there is the need for caution to avoid damaging the image of the country.

“The National Re-Orientation Agency should redouble its efforts in addressing this problem, as the menace is fast eroding the nation’s values,” the don said.

Ayo attributed the cause of rape in the country to moral decadence, lack of the fear of God, and respect for mankind.

“In the primary, secondary and tertiary levels, the nation has recorded a lot of rape cases due to moral decadence.

“Something must be done urgently to bring culprits to book to serve as a deterrent to others, who have the intention of committing similar crimes,” he said.

Ayo also called for effective community policing across the country to check the menace, as those engaged in such acts were evil-minded.

He noted that kidnapping and other social vices could be better addressed through effective community policing in the country.
