The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed the death of two children in a car accident that occurred in Kere, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The accident happened around 11 pm on Saturday and involved a white Toyota Camry with registration number AGL36JA.

According to Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Command, a total of nine people were in the vehicle during the accident. “A total of 7 male adults, 1 male child, and 1 female child were involved in the crash. The male child and the female child were killed, while the others sustained various injuries,” Okpe stated. She added that the injured were taken to Ifo General Hospital, and the bodies of the deceased children were also deposited at the same hospital.

The FRSC spokesperson attributed the accident to overloading and excessive speed. She explained that the car was carrying more passengers than it should have, which contributed to the crash. “The suspected causes of the crash were excessive speed and overloading. The car was overloaded with passengers,” she said.

The Ogun State Sector Commander, Akinwumi Fasakin, condemned the accident and described it as a clear sign of disregard for safety by both the driver and passengers. He stressed the dangers of overloading vehicles, not only for the driver but also for other road users. “This crash shows a disregard for life by the driver and passengers, who saw nothing wrong with the car being grossly overloaded,” Fasakin said.

Fasakin also advised motorists to avoid overloading their vehicles with passengers or goods, as it is against traffic regulations and poses serious risks on the road. He extended his condolences to the families of the children who died and wished the injured a quick recovery.

The FRSC has urged drivers to be mindful of road safety rules to prevent further tragedies on the roads.
