Police clears officer of alleged N22m extortion charge
The Nigeria Police has cleared Officer Cordelia Nwanwe of accusations involving the extortion of N22 million after a thorough investigation.
The legal representative of the police officer, Mr. Adebola Odunyemi, disclosed this information to journalists in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Nwanwe, along with two other officers, had been accused by Morakinyo Peter and Yusuf Dayo on July 14, 2021, of extorting bitcoin worth N22 million from them while driving on Ikoyi/Ajah Expressway in Lagos. Subsequently, investigations were launched into the serious allegations.
In a statement provided to newsmen, Odunyemi clarified that the investigation’s outcome revealed Nwanwe had no direct involvement in the entire scenario and has been exonerated. The human rights lawyer issued the statement in response to an online platform’s report claiming that Nwanwe was promoted despite the extortion accusations.
According to Odunyemi, the petitions concerning the alleged extortion had been withdrawn long ago, and the matter was resolved amicably.
“We have the utmost responsibility to set the record straight as a minister in the temple of justice. The above subject matter was indeed reported to the force headquarters by our firm and has since been resolved,” the statement read.
“During the investigation, it was discovered that Madam Cordelia Nwanwe had no direct participation in the whole scenario leading to the arrest of our clients, and a letter of withdrawal was issued from our firm to the force headquarters.”
He urged the public to disregard any publication indicting the officers, emphasizing that they were not contacted to provide the true picture of what transpired before the malicious report was posted.
