Pep Guardiola praised Phil Foden as an “exceptional” player following the midfielder’s hat trick performance that propelled Manchester City to a 3-1 victory over Brentford in west London on Monday, emphasizing Foden’s consistent impact on the team.
Despite initial challenges posed by Brentford, who took the lead through Neal Maupay in the 21st minute and saw goalkeeper Mark Flekken make several crucial saves, Foden’s equalizer just before half-time and subsequent goals in the second half secured City’s win.
Guardiola expressed the significance of Foden’s contributions during a press conference, stating, “We needed it [Foden’s performance] today. I think Phil is playing … the most [influential] season for the team in terms of goals, assists. How he played simple, how he can be more aggressive. He has the pleasure to score the goals and the threat when he’s close to their box. Always he is there.”
He continued to commend Foden’s prowess, highlighting his impact despite his youth and already substantial experience with over 250 games for City.
Reflecting on Foden’s hat trick, Guardiola mused, “I don’t know his limits. He will decide. For him, football is the most important thing of his life.”
The match against Brentford marked the return of both Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland to City’s starting lineup after prolonged absences due to injury.
Guardiola acknowledged Haaland’s contribution despite not scoring, noting his role in creating space for other attacking players.
Guardiola also praised Brentford’s performance, recognizing their defensive resilience and set-piece prowess, hailing them as a formidable opponent.
