Tensions reached a boiling point as defender Sergio Ramos confronted a supporter at the Sanchez Pizjuan after Sevilla’s 2-0 defeat to Athletic Club on Thursday.
The 37-year-old, visibly frustrated, broke away from his post-match interview with DAZN to address the fan, vehemently urging them to “shut up and show some respect.”
Ramos, a product of Sevilla’s academy, directed his impassioned words towards the crowd, saying, “Show a little respect, we’re talking. Have some respect for people and the [Sevilla] badge, we’re talking. Respect people, go on, shut up and walk away.”
Sevilla’s performance this season has been lackluster, winning only three of their 19 LaLiga games and finding themselves just one point above the relegation zone at the halfway stage of the campaign.
The team has undergone managerial changes, with Quique Sánchez Flores taking over in December following the dismissals of José Luis Mendilibar and Diego Alonso.
Despite Ramos’ return to Sevilla last summer, a decision that involved turning down more lucrative offers, the veteran defender has faced mixed reactions from the club’s supporters.
His departure to Real Madrid in 2005 and subsequent gestures during matches, including celebrating a goal against Sevilla with ear-cupping, have contributed to a complex relationship with the fanbase.
Sevilla’s struggles on the pitch and the heightened emotions were evident as the players were jeered off at half-time and full-time during the recent defeat to Athletic Club.
