Four commissioners resign amid Wike-Fubara rift
Amidst the escalating crisis in Rivers State, four commissioners have tendered their resignations from the state executive council.
The Commissioner for Works, Dr. George-Kelly Alabo, and Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mrs. Inime Chinwenwo-Aguma, have joined the growing list of officials stepping down.
The resignations of Alabo and Chinwenwo-Aguma followed closely after the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Prof Zacchaeus Adangor, also resigned from his position.
In a letter dated December 14 addressed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Alabo, a known supporter of former Governor Nyesom Wike, expressed that his decision to resign was guided by his conscience, personal philosophy, and professional ethics.
The letter, titled ‘Resignation as Honourable Commissioner For Works, Rivers State,’ stated, “My decision to resign is anchored on my conscience, personal philosophy, and professional ethics. This decision was taken after deep introspection.”
He extended gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve in his administration.
The crisis within the 32-member Rivers State House of Assembly has been brewing due to a conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in the APC-controlled government.
Wike, however, remains a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.
The recent demolition of the Assembly Complex by Governor Fubara, citing its unsuitability, further fueled tensions.
The Assembly had been divided, with factions loyal to Fubara and Wike respectively.
The ongoing political upheaval in the oil-rich state has yet to find resolution despite interventions from prominent political figures.
