Onana howlers, Ziyech heroics dent Man Utd UCL hopes
Manchester United’s UEFA Champions League aspirations suffered a major setback following a thrilling 3-3 draw with Galatasaray in Istanbul.
Despite taking a commanding 2-0 and 3-1 lead, the Red Devils squandered their advantage, leaving their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages hanging by a thread.
United’s hopes were ignited early on by Alejandro Garnacho, who followed up his stunning strike against Everton with another impressive finish on 11 minutes. Bruno Fernandes doubled the visitors’ lead shortly after with a brilliant 25-yard curler that flew into the top corner.
Galatasaray responded with a determined effort, reducing the deficit through a low free-kick from Hakim Ziyech that slipped through a split defensive wall and an unsighted Andre Onana.
The pulsating match continued in the second half, with Scott McTominay restoring United’s two-goal lead with a near-post finish on 55 minutes.
However, Onana’s costly error allowed Ziyech to level the score with another free-kick, before substitute Kerem Akturkoglu netted a thunderous effort to put the hosts ahead.
Despite chances for both sides in an enthralling finale, the match ended in a dramatic draw, leaving United’s Champions League hopes in jeopardy.
The Red Devils now face a must-win clash against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Matchday 6, while Galatasaray will travel to FC Copenhagen with second place still up for grabs.
