Aston Villa stun Tottenham with dramatic comeback victory
Aston Villa defied the odds to snatch a 2-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur, handing them their third consecutive defeat.
A somber mood enveloped the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as both sets of supporters paid tribute to former Spurs manager Terry Venables, who passed away at the age of 80.
Perhaps inspired by the pre-match tributes, Tottenham started with a fiery intensity, creating two early goal-scoring opportunities through Destiny Udogie and Dejan Kulusevski.
Their persistence eventually paid off when Giovani Lo Celso, making his first Premier League start in over two years, unleashed a powerful drive that deflected off Diego Carlos and past Emiliano Martinez, giving Spurs the lead.
However, Spurs’ momentum faltered as errors crept into their game, allowing Villa to capitalize. Pau Torres headed in an equalizer just before halftime, restoring parity to the match.
Son Heung-min’s frustration grew as three of his potential goals were disallowed, leaving Spurs’ chances of victory dwindling.
Ollie Watkins then completed the remarkable turnaround for Villa, slotting home the winning goal to move Villa above Spurs into fourth place in the Premier League standings.
