The Office of the National Security Adviser has joined forces with the United Nations Development Programme and the German Embassy in Nigeria to implement a comprehensive police reform initiative in a landmark move to enhance public safety and strengthen law enforcement.
This strategic partnership, formalized during a meeting between the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the UNDP Resident Representative, Mohamed Yahya, and the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Gunther, signifies a concerted effort to transform the Nigerian Police Force into a trusted, efficient, and rights-respecting institution.
The agreement is expected to support the Special Committee on Police Reform, established by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and underpin the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering a police service that upholds the rule of law and delivers quality public service.
According to Vanguard, a statement by Mr. Zakari Mijinyawa Head, Strategic Communication, ONSA said, “The agreement is expected to support the work of the Special Committee on Police Reform constituted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the last National Police Council meeting.
“During the meeting, the NSA reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to lead a comprehensive police reform process anchored on trust, human rights, rule of law and efficient public service”.
In recognition of UNDP’s ongoing contributions to police training modernization and extensive support for police reform initiatives in Nigeria, the NSA expressed his gratitude.
Additionally, he conveyed Nigeria’s appreciation to the German Ambassador for Germany’s unwavering financial and technical support to police reform efforts.
The German Ambassador welcomed Nigeria’s commitment to police reform and reiterated Germany’s unwavering support for the initiative.
Echoing this sentiment, the UNDP Resident Representative expressed the organization’s readiness to partner with the Nigerian government in realizing the objectives of the Federal Government’s police reform program.
