The Nigeria Democratic Congress and the Obidient Movement have faulted claims by former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Ganduje, that a presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso stands no chance of winning the 2027 general election.
The two groups maintained that both Obi and Kwankwaso have proven records in public office and command significant political support across the country, particularly in Kano State, which they said positions them strongly for future electoral contests.
Ganduje had dismissed the proposed NDC presidential ticket as dead on arrival, insisting that neither Obi nor Kwankwaso possesses the leadership credentials or political legacy required to secure victory in a presidential election.
He also questioned the popularity and performance of the two politicians during their respective tenures in Anambra and Kano states.
Responding to the remarks, the NDC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, dismissed Ganduje’s position, saying, “he is just blabbing.”
Abdulsalam argued that the former APC national chairman no longer holds significant political influence in Kano, adding that the NDC is confident of leveraging Kwankwaso’s popularity to secure victories in the state.
He added, “We are confident of clearing all the state Assembly seats. We are also confident of winning the senatorial, House of Reps and governorship elections as well.”
The NDC spokesman further said Obi’s performance in the 2023 presidential election demonstrated his national appeal, expressing confidence that the former Anambra governor would attract even greater support from northern Nigeria due to the country’s current economic challenges.
Also reacting, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr Yunusa Tanko, criticised Ganduje’s comments and questioned his credibility.
Tanko defended Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, saying, “He left N75bn in the coffers of Anambra State.”
He also commended Kwankwaso’s achievements while serving as governor of Kano State, citing infrastructure development and education initiatives that enabled students from the state to study abroad.
