Bayelsa polls: Ijaw youths condemn killing at election collation centre
The Ijaw Youth Council has denounced the killing of George Sibo, also known as “Kobo-Kobo,” who was shot in the head at the Governorship Election Collation Centre in Brass Local Government Area Headquarters.
Sibo, a middle-aged man and aide to the Brass Local Government Chairman, Hanson Alabo-Karika, fell victim to the attack reportedly carried out by political thugs.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Spokesperson, Bedford Berefa, the IYC expressed deep concern over the incident, labeling it as “unfortunate, senseless, and unreasonable.”
The statement reads in part, “The Ijaw Youth Council vehemently condemns the recent surge of violence in the Brass Local Government Area. The incident, marked by a fatal attack, is believed to have been orchestrated by purported loyalists to a specific party candidate.
“As a body, we are deeply concerned about the escalating political violence, as such actions severely threaten the democratic process and the overall well-being of the state.
“It’s distressing to witness the loss of life due to political interests. Violence has no place in a democratic society. A lost life equals a lost generation, and a crucial part of the Ijaw future has been lost unnecessarily.
“We demand an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the incident. Law enforcement agencies must ensure that those responsible for the violence face the full force of the law. Perpetrators of such atrocious acts must be held accountable to preserve the sanctity of our electoral process and protect the lives of our people.”
IYC also appealed to political actors to prioritize peaceful engagement and refrain from actions that could incite violence, emphasizing the need for a commitment to a peaceful democratic process in the region.
