The Bayelsa State Government has imposed a curfew on the Opu-Nembe community in Nembe Local Government Area following the outbreak of violence. The curfew, which takes effect from Saturday, will last from 6 pm to 6 am daily until further notice.
The state governor, Douye Diri, announced the curfew after a closed-door meeting with members of the Security Council in the state. He also dissolved all the youth and chieftaincy councils in Opu-Nembe, saying they had failed to maintain peace and order in the community.
The governor said his administration had ensured peace and stability in Bayelsa State for over three years since he assumed office. He condemned the recent clashes between rival groups in Opu-Nembe, which he described as senseless and barbaric.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Akpoebi Agberebi, briefed journalists on the resolutions reached at the security meeting. He further stated that the security council had called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to withdraw the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team deployed to Opu-Nembe and allow the joint security agents in the state to handle the situation.
