Robert Mugabe resigns after 37 years of ruling Zimbabwe
President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe has resigned.
The resignation announcement was made by the country’s parliament speaker, Jacob Mudenda.
The announcement came while lawmakers were still debating an impeachment motion against the 93-year-old leader in a joint sitting of parliament.
Robert Mugabe had previously refused to resign despite last week’s military takeover, and days of protests against his rule.
He has been in power since independence in 1980.
