Lawmaker tasks farmers, herdsmen on peaceful co-existence in Nasarawa
Mr. Danladi Jatau, Minority Leader, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, stressed the need for peaceful coexistence between farmers and herdsmen, saying it would boost food production in the state.
Jatau, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Public Complaints, Petitions, and Security, made the call while briefing newsmen in Lafia on the security situation in his constituency.
The lawmaker, representing Kokona West constituency in the Assembly, underscored the benefits of peaceful co-existence among people, maintaining that peace was priceless and non-negotiable.
“The farmers and herdsmen should see each other as brothers and sisters.
“I feel very sad about the security situation in my constituency. It is indeed disheartening that there is a problem between farmers and herdsmen in Bassa district of my constituency.
“What is happening in my constituency is unfortunate and needs urgent attention,” he said.
Jatau, however, commended Gov. Abdullahi Sule for taking proactive measures in addressing security challenges in the state.
“Gov. Abdullahi Sule deserves commendation over the steps he has taken to address the security challenges facing the state.
“He has met with President Muhammadu Buhari and briefed him on the security situation of our state and the president has approved the deployment of soldiers.
“We are expecting some of the soldiers in my constituency, especially the affected communities, in order to curtail the present security breaches,” he said.
The lawmaker also commended security agents for rising to the occasion, calling on them to put more effort into protecting the lives and property of the people of the state.
He appealed to the affected persons and communities not to retaliate but to allow the law to take its course in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Jatau called on the Fulani leaders and the farmers in the constituency to assist the security agencies in fishing out the perpetrators of the heinous acts to serve as a deterrent to others.
The lawmaker assured the people of his constituency of good representation through the enactment of laws that would protect their lives and property as well as improve their standard of living.
