COVID-19: Nigeria may be heading the way of Italy, Group warns
A civil society group, Coalition for a Better Nigeria, has lamented the current state of the nation saying the country is sitting on a time bomb in the light of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The group spoke through its National Coordinator, Awa Bamiji, in a statement on Tuesday noted that the Federal Government was not proactive in the fight against the coronavirus spread in the land.
It read in parts,
“It is so painful that as at today, our findings confirmed that the poor masses still believe that this coronavirus disease is rampant among the elites and so, they themselves are very safe.
“If we carefully look at the present record, the percentage of the ruling elite, literate class, and the politicians that have their results positive at the end of their medical check-up is alarming.
“What is most worrisome is that their contacts tracing because it is not possible to achieve it 100 per cent or close to it. The implication is that for any record of coronavirus case, Nigeria and, indeed, Africa stands a chance of having a loose end.
“We can achieve a lot if we ensure we judiciously utilise the billions of Naira donated by our caring billionaires and millionaires in Nigeria and their foreign counterparts, by making sure we have total lockdown, provisions of food, drinks, money and establishment of the medical checkpoints across Nigeria, while we look for permanent cure to the pandemic.
“In a few days to come, if the medical facilities to do the checkups, as well as the treatment, are not in place we may be heading the way of Italy.”
