Herdsmen kill farmer in Ogun
Suspected herdsmen have killed a farmer on his farm in Fagboun village in Yewa South local government area of Ogun state.
The village head, Chief Simeon Fagbohun, on Saturday, while narrating how it happened, said the suspected herdsmen allegedly hacked a farmer identified as Araba to death around 4:pm on Friday on his farm
He said the villagers woke up to see large numbers of herds that have invaded their village.
According to him, our major occupation in the village is farming. We don’t know what argument ensued between Araba and the herders.
“What we know is that they (the herders) took their herds to his farm which he resisted and they hacked him to death.
He, however, said,
“We didn’t see the herdsmen who perpetrated that evil, we have informed the police, In fact, the Area Commander is also aware.
“The police took the corpse to Ilaro. But we have taken the corpse from the police because if they are allowed to take the corpse to the mortuary, it will cost the family another expense before they can take it back. And we have buried the corpse same day .”
While lamenting on the havoc wrecked by the herdsmen, Fagboun said the herds are too many in the village, saying, the grasses their cows feed on have all dried up.
He said,
“But, the cassava plantations are still fresh, so, what they now do is to take their herds to those farms and eat up the cassava leaves.
When asked what the villagers want from the government, the village head begged the government to come to their rescue.
When contacted , the Police Public Relations Officer in the state , Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident .
Oyeyemi said the Police were yet to identify the killers of the farmer, adding that the command had swung into action to unravel the perpetrators of the act.
According to Oyeyemi, the police discovered that the deceased was macheted in the head and in the hand.
“But, the police have begun an investigation to know the killers, the Commissioner of Police has directed the homicide section to commence a full-scale investigation into the matter and bring the perpetrators to book .”
