The Nigerian National Assembly has had a very tough time since President Muhammadu Buhari took over power from Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
Below are 6 major scandals that have rocked the National Assembly, since the new administration took over.
6. Budget Padding
The 2016 National Budget was reportedly padded by members of the legislative arm of government. Honorable Abdulmumin Jibrin had accused members of the lower Legislative House of adding more than was ethically required to the budget.
This scandal had many calling for the resignation of even the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.
5. Exotic Cars
Despite the cash crunch, member of the legislative arm of government, passed a bill that saw them buying very expensive cars.
About 108 exortic cars was purchased by the Senate leadership to its members, a development which was frowned at and described as an act of insensitivity to the plights of Nigerians by their so called leaders.
The legislators have tried to defend themselves but the Nigerian people cannot agree especially now when it is become more difficult for the masses.
4. Screening of ministers
After having waited for too long for the list of ministers, the Nigerian Senate had a hard time approving the ministers, as Senators of the opposition party walked out as some candidates were called for assessment.
3. Electing key officials
Electing key officials for the National Assembly was a very great scandal as the legislators fought, argued and turned the parliament downside up.
The emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President alongside his vice and the election of Speaker Dogara were all very dramatic, one that will not be forgotten for all the intrigues.
2. Tinubu vs Melaye
Senator Oluremi Tinubu had a very big clash with Senator Dino Melaye, a clash with sent the nation berserk.
According to reports, Senator Melaye had allegedly threatened to rape Tinubu and get her pregnant.
Women and men across the nation protested, calling for the sanctioning of Senator Melaye, a development which many though would lead to an all out war between ex-governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubua and Melaye who had to come down to Lagos, in the wake of threats that he would be severely dealt with if he ever come to the centre of excellence.
1 Nigerian – US sex scandal
Three legislators were accused of inappropriate conducts while on an official trip to the United States.
According to reports, the United States government raised serious allegations of sexual misconduct and attempted rape against Nigerian lawmakers.
The U.S. ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, made the allegation in a letter sent to the Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on June 9.
The accused members are Samuel Ikon (PDP, Akwa Ibom), Mohammed Gololo (APC, Bauchi) and Mark Gbillah (APC, Benue).
The petition said they attempted to commit rape, and solicited sex from prostitutes during their trip to Cleveland, United States, for the International Visitor Leadership Program.
