Expert berates FG’s inactions on discrimination Act nine months after signing
A special educator, Prof Julius Ademokoya has berated the non-implementation of the disability act, nine months after it has been signed into law.
He made this submission on Thursday during an annual public lecture organized by the National Alumni association of the Federal College of Education (Special) Oyo.
“The Prohibition of Discrimination against People with Disability Act stipulated the constitution of a National Commission for People with Special Needs but nine months after, nothing has been done. It is this commission that is statutorily expected to implement the Act ” he said.
“Ademokoya also pointed out several ambiguities in the act which he said will militate against the full implementation of the act by the year 2024. “
A section of the act stipulated that government will subsidize the education of people with disability, it does not clearly state which level of government and what forms of subsidy” the professor of special education noted.
The occasion which was organized in honour of the outgoing Deputy Provost of the college Dr Theo Ajobiewe also featured award ceremony to distinguished individuals among whom were the governor of Oyo State Eng. Seyi Makinde, Prince Adeyinka Afonja, Prof Taoheed Adedoja, a former Minister of Youth and Sports among others.
The governor who was represented by his Executive Assistant on Disability Matters, Barrister Adekanbi promised to implement policies
that will promote the inclusion of people with special needs, especially in education.
In his address, the President of the association Dr Mojeed Oladimeji emphasised the need to upgrade the college to a degree-awarding institution.
