The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, said he has spoken with his Osun State counterpart, Gboyega Oyetola, over the implementation of the plan to split the Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, to put an end to the crisis rocking the institution.

Makinde revealed this during a media chat on his first 100 days in office on the state-owned BCOS TV in Ibadan, which was live-tweeted on his Twitter handle @seyimakinde.

LAUTECH, which is co-owned by Osun and Oyo states, has been engulfed in a series of crisis over issues bordering on irregular subvention and unpaid salaries, leading to consistent closure of the school.

Makinde explained during the media chat that an agreement to split the institution was signed during the administration of Governors Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State and Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun State but never implemented.

He added that he would not shy away from splitting the institution, which according to him is “very important to Ogbomoso”.

Makinde also noted that the state has decided to pay off the salary owed to LAUTECH workers by Osun state so that the students of the university will not suffer.

He said:

“Yesterday, the governing council came to see me and we discussed all these. We’ve signed for worker payments but since it’s owned by both Osun and Oyo states, unfortunately, Osun state has not paid. This can not continue.”

“A few days ago, I spoke to the Osun governor, Gboyega Oyetola, the plan to split was signed between Akala and Oyinlola but we don’t know why it wasn’t implemented. Oyo State will have to pay the salary of LAUTECH (Osun’s share) because I don’t want the students to suffer.

“If we have to split up, then so be it, I won’t shy away from this divorce. LAUTECH is very important to Ogbomoso.”
