At least 14 people have been confirmed dead and more than 38 others injured following a bomb explosion that struck the southern Colombian municipality of Cajibio on Saturday, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The incident occurred in the Cauca Department, where five children were among those injured, the region’s Health Secretary, Carolina Camargo, disclosed during an appearance on a local television news programme.

Reports from local media indicate that an explosive device struck a bus along the El Tunel stretch of the Pan-American Highway, which connects the cities of Cali and Popayan.

Images circulating online show extensive destruction, including severe damage to the bus roof and windows, as well as parts of the highway.

The office of Octavio Guzman confirmed that efforts are underway to assist those affected, adding that a national security council meeting has been convened to address the situation.
