A wave of violence swept through parts of Ogun State, claiming lives and stirring fear among residents as a result of a deadly cult clash and a vigilante mob’s swift justice against an alleged bag snatcher.
In the Bode Olude area of Abeokuta South Local Government Area, a violent clash erupted late Tuesday, leaving one person, identified as Segun, dead. According to a police source, the assailants, numbering about six and armed with guns and cutlasses, stormed the area on motorcycles, attacking Segun and inflicting fatal injuries.
Confirming the incident, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, disclosed that one suspect had been apprehended in connection with the crime. She stated, “Upon receiving this information, the patrol team quickly arrived at the scene. They found a man named Segun, also known as Joyibo, lying in a pool of blood with his right wrist slashed by the cult boys.”
In a separate incident in Sagamu, irate youths took justice into their own hands when they apprehended a man suspected of snatching a woman’s bag along the expressway. Witnesses recounted how the suspect, attempting to flee, scaled a fence into a construction site but ended up assaulting a security guard. The furious mob descended on him, beating him into a coma.
Confirming the incident, Odutola revealed that the suspect had succumbed to his injuries while the security guard was receiving treatment at the hospital. She added, “His corpse has been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo Hospital morgue for possible identification. In the meantime, the security guard is responding to treatment. We have begun a preliminary investigation to unravel the circumstances of the incident.”
