President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerian workers of better living and working conditions, emphasizing their right to fair wages and enhanced welfare.

In his inaugural May Day message dedicated to workers nationwide, President Tinubu conveyed his commitment to improving the welfare of all workers.

His pledge was delivered by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement titled ‘President Tinubu Salutes Nigerian Workers on May Day.’

According to Ngelale, the President affirmed his administration’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of workers, citing ongoing relief programs and the impending review of the minimum wage.

“Tinubu strongly believes that the custodians of the nation’s machinery deserve a fair wage and enhanced welfare and that a labourer is deserving of not just any reward but fair and commensurate wages,” the statement read.

Tinubu’s remarks come amidst a backdrop of economic challenges triggered by recent policy reforms, including the discontinuation of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates.

Defending these measures at a recent World Economic Forum session, Tinubu described them as necessary actions to prevent economic bankruptcy and reset the economy for growth.

On May Day, Tinubu hailed Nigerian workers for their unwavering commitment to the nation’s peace, progress, and development. He commended workers across various sectors for their tireless efforts and patriotic zeal in keeping the national engine running.

“The President wishes Nigerian workers Happy May Day celebrations,” the statement concluded.

The celebration of Workers’ Day in Nigeria traces its origins to the adoption of May 1 as a public holiday by the People’s Redemption Party government in Kaduna and Kano in 1980. Subsequently, the Federal Government declared May 1 as a national holiday in 1981 to commemorate International Workers’ Day.
