Chaos erupts in Delta as police allegedly shoot protesters
Chaos erupts in Delta as police allegedly shoot protestersVideos circulating on social media depict scenes of chaos and unrest at the Okpanam Road axis, Midwifery, in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
This development comes in the wake of recent turmoil in the region, particularly the reported burning of Okuama community in the Ughelli South Local Government Area by the Nigerian Army following the killing of 16 soldiers on a peace mission.
In footage shared by popular blog NigeriaStories, armed policemen are seen firing directly at protesters in Asaba.
State police command spokesperson, Bright Edafe, offered clarification on the incident, stating that the police personnel were deployed to quell an ongoing protest against a state task force.
“They are policemen deployed to quell an ongoing protest against one of the State taskforce in Asaba pls,” Edafe explained.
However, Edafe’s response has sparked criticism from Nigerian netizens who perceive the officers’ actions as reckless.
“Deployed to quell by shooting directly at the people, in a busy area? what kind of quelling is that,” questioned one user, Emuoborsan.
Another user, DR El Mo, expressed concern over the direct firing at protesters, questioning whether such actions were justifiable.
This incident adds to the already tense atmosphere in Delta State following the violent clash between the Nigerian Army and Okuama community residents.
