Israeli international, Eran Zahavi, was the star of the show on Wednesday as he bagged a hat-trick for PSV Eindhoven in their 5-1 Champions League second qualifying round first leg thrashing of Turkey’s Galatasaray.
Zahavi opened the scoring after just two minutes and was on the mark again just after the half-hour before completing his treble in the closing minutes.
German 2014 World Cup winner Mario Goetze scored a brace while Emre Kilinc netted a consolation as the Dutch hosts all but booked their passage to the third qualifying round where they will play either Scotland’s Celtic or Denmark’s Midtjylland, who parted 1-1 in Glasgow on Tuesday.
Red Star Belgrade, European champions in 1991, had a far more difficult time of it as they lost 2-1 at Kazakh outfit Kairat Almaty for whom Spaniard Jose Kante scored a first-half opener.
Croatian Dino Mikanovic put through his own goal on the hour to see Red Star level.
But Cameroon defender Macky Bagnack, who only recently arrived at Kairat from Serbian SuperLiga club FK Partizan, had the last word with a 79th-minute winner.
Elsewhere, Sweden’s Malmo take a 2-1 advantage to Finland for their second leg after hosting HJK Helsinki.
Croatian forward Antonio Colak put the Swedes ahead in first half stoppage time.
Although Roope Riski levelled matters midway through the second half, Malmo scored again through Danish midfielder Anders Christiansen.
Poland’s Legia Warsaw likewise take a 2-1 lead to Estonia’s Flora Tallinn after Rafael Lopes, their Portuguese striker, scored a last-gasp winner.
Bartosz Kapustka had scored on three minutes for the Poles but they looked to have fluffed their lines when Rauno Sappinen levelled eight minutes into the second half before Lopes’ late intervention.
Olympiakos of Greece thanked a goal from Guinean midfielder Mady Camara for their 1-0 home win over Neftchi of Azerbaijan — though he was later sent off, as was Neftchi’s Mert Celik.
The games between Mura of Slovenia and Bulgaria’s Ludogorets and Slovan Bratislava of Slovakia and Swiss side Young Boys both ended goalless.
