Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has responded to recent remarks directed at him by music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, following a disagreement over the singer’s actions during a major international event.
The dispute began after Davido took aim at Omokri on social media over comments regarding the ambassador-designate’s delayed resumption of duties in Mexico.
Escalating the exchange, the award-winning singer used his Instagram Story to describe Omokri with derogatory terms, including calling him a dog and a fowl.
In a lengthy open letter shared across his social media platforms on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Omokri addressed the controversy and defended his earlier criticism of the singer.
He explained why he opposed Davido’s decision to draw international attention to the plight of abducted schoolchildren from Oyo State during a global event.
The controversy stemmed from Davido’s appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup countdown concert in Los Angeles, where he wore a customised jacket displaying the names of kidnapped schoolchildren alongside the message, “Bring Them Home.” While acknowledging that the gesture may have been well-intentioned, Omokri argued that it inadvertently amplified the visibility of criminal groups responsible for the abductions.
According to Omokri, such actions risk providing terrorists and bandits with the publicity they seek, rather than increasing pressure on authorities to secure the release of the victims. He also suggested that Davido’s reaction to his criticism may have been influenced by praise the singer received from former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.
In the letter, Omokri expressed disappointment over the singer’s response and the language used against him.
“Dear Mr. David Adeleke AKA @Davido Thank you for your feedback. I was rather surprised by your response to my post. Most shocking is your insult. You are an international celebrity whom Nigeria is proud of. Coming to insult me on my Instagram profile with such vulgar words should be beneath you.
“Yes, I am aware that you were upset at my appeal to you not to use an international platform, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to give publicity to bandits and terrorists. I am also aware that Peter Obi praised you for doing that, which may have made you feel compelled to defend him.
“I did that because while your intention may be good and you think you are pressuring the government, the actual effect of what you did is to give publicity to the terrorists and help them spread fear, recruit new members, and raise funds, Omokri wrote in part.”
