Akon may have been silent for a while now, but it doesn’t mean he is out of circulation.Senegalese-American singer, entrepreneur and philanthropist Akon is in Liberia to install solar power in schools in the country, advancing the goal of his Lighting Africa initiative.

Akon has partnered with Bridge Partnership Schools, Liberia’s Ministry of Education and others to launch the#LightToLearn initiative which is aimed at increasing access to clean and affordable energy resources to foster quality learning in remote villages in Liberia.

The singer whose real name is Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam is expected to personally light up the communities around two Bridge Partnership Schools: the J.W. Pearson Elementary School in Monrovia; and Zuluyee Public School in the Ganta District of Nimba County, reports footprints2africa.com.

Akon launched Akon Lighting Africa in February 2014 to develop an innovative solar-powered solution to provide clean and affordable electricity to the estimated 600 million Africans without access to electricity.

However, ynetnews.com reports that Akon is in the west African country to endorse the country’s plan to outsource oversight of its primary education system to a U.S.-based for-profit company.

Akon’s visit follows  Liberia’s plans to allow Bridge International Academies to write curricula and train teachers, unveiled six months ago, the website reports.

Some Liberian educators denounced the plan, saying the country should focus on improving salaries and not cede control of schools to outsiders.

However, Akon believes the partnership could be helpful, and he disagrees with those who argue the government should be responsible for everything.
