Japan strengthened their reputation as one of the standout teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 4-0 victory over Tunisia, a result that confirmed the North Africans’ exit from the tournament.
According to Fox Sports, the Asian side delivered a dominant display in the 1,000th men’s World Cup match, controlling possession, creating numerous chances and exposing Tunisia’s defensive weaknesses throughout the contest.
The defeat capped a disappointing campaign for Tunisia, who have now conceded nine goals and scored just once in two matches. The result also highlighted the team’s struggles despite a recent coaching change following their 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening fixture.
New coach Hervé Renard was unable to halt the slide as Tunisia struggled to cope with Japan’s pace, organisation and attacking movement. The Eagles of Carthage managed little threat going forward and were frequently exposed at the back.
Japan, meanwhile, continued the impressive form they showed in their 2-2 draw against the Netherlands. Under coach Hajime Moriyasu, the Samurai Blue looked organised and clinical, with Daichi Kamada opening the scoring in the fifth minute after finishing a cross from Keito Nakamura.
The Asian side’s third goal showcased their quality in possession, as defender Ko Itakura initiated a move that ended with Junya Ito finding the net after a clever assist from Ayase Ueda.
The performance was made even more impressive by the number of key players unavailable through injury. Captain Wataru Endo, Kaoru Mitoma, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Koki Machida all missed the tournament, while Takefusa Kubo was sidelined after picking up a knee injury against the Netherlands.
Despite those absences, Japan have continued to perform at a high level, underlining the depth and quality within the squad.
The victory leaves Japan in a strong position heading into their final Group F match against Sweden, while Tunisia bow out of the competition after a campaign marked by defensive struggles, managerial instability and disappointing results.
With confidence growing and momentum firmly on their side, Japan are increasingly emerging as one of the teams capable of making a significant impact in the knockout stages.
