Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu says he hopes his side’s impressive campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will encourage other Asian nations to believe they can compete on the global stage.

According to AFP, Moriyasu made the remarks after Japan secured a place in the Round of 32 with a 1-1 draw against Sweden in Texas on Thursday, setting up a clash with five-time champions Brazil.

His comments came after AFP footage captured Chinese football fans in Shanghai celebrating Japan’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Tunisia, despite the long-standing political tensions between the two neighbouring countries.

Reflecting on Japan’s growing influence, Moriyasu said the team was proud to represent not only their country but also the Asian continent.

“We are representing Japan, but we’re proud to be representing Japan towards the world.

“And of course, now we are representing Asia.

“I know that other Asians teams are not as successful.

“Even if today we couldn’t get the win, I would like us to be able to encourage other Asian teams as well, and we would like to be their hope.

“Also, if we’re having good competitions among Asian teams, that can get the level up.”

Japan have been one of the standout teams at the tournament and will now face Brazil in the knockout stage.

Elsewhere, South Korea remain in contention for a place in the next round as one of the best third-placed teams, while Iran and Australia are also still in the race for qualification.

China, meanwhile, failed to qualify for the World Cup once again, with their only appearance at the tournament dating back to the 2002 edition.
