Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has returned to winning ways after claiming the women’s 100m hurdles title at the Grand Prix Brescia in Italy. This victory comes ahead of the Diamond League Final.
According to Punch Sports Extra, Amusan crossed the finish line in 12.56 seconds on Sunday. She achieved this despite competing against a 1.7 metres-per-second headwind.
Amusan beats American rival
The Nigerian finished ahead of American hurdler Alaysha Johnson, who clocked 12.62 seconds to take second place.
Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent completed the podium in 12.75 seconds.
The victory provided an encouraging response for Amusan just days after American Olympic champion Masai Russell broke her long-standing world record.
Russell clocked 12.09 seconds at the Zurich Diamond League. She improved on the 12.12-second mark Amusan set at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene.
Amusan finished second in Zurich in a season-best 12.23 seconds.
Diamond League showdown awaits
Amusan and Russell are expected to meet again at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium. It is scheduled for September 4 and 5.
The Nigerian will be aiming to reclaim a title she has already won three times.
Amusan was Diamond League champion in 2021, 2022 and 2023. Thus, she established herself as one of the leading sprint hurdlers of her generation.
Her victory in Brescia gives her fresh momentum ahead of another expected showdown with Russell in Brussels.
