Australia began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note with a 2-0 victory over Turkey in a Group D encounter on Sunday.
According to Vanguard, the Socceroo’s delivered a disciplined display to secure all three points against a Turkish side that enjoyed long spells of possession but failed to convert their chances.
Australia took the lead in the 27th minute through Nestory Irankunda, who finished off a swift counter attack after a well worked move from midfield.
Turkey responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser and created several opportunities, but Australia’s defence stood firm. Goalkeeper Patrick Beach also produced a number of crucial saves to keep his side ahead before the interval.
The Turkish side continued to dominate possession in the second half, but Australia remained dangerous on the break and eventually doubled their advantage in the 75th minute.
Connor Metcalfe sealed the victory with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area, putting the result beyond Turkey’s reach.
The win gives Australia an important three points in Group D and boosts their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
For Turkey, the defeat marks a disappointing start to their campaign, leaving them in need of a positive result in their next group fixture to revive their qualification hopes.
Australia’s defensive organisation and clinical finishing proved decisive as they claimed one of the standout results of the latest round of World Cup group stage matches.
