Woman burnt to death as fire razes building in Benin

Shop owners rue losses as fire guts llorin shopping plaza



A woman at 64, First East Circular Road, Benin, Edo State, was on Saturday killed in an early morning fire.

The middle-aged woman was simply known as Azize.

It was learnt that the fire started around 12.30 am from the ground floor and quickly spread to the upper floor while most occupants were already asleep.

However, the timely intervention of the State Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to other houses.

Men from the Esigie Police Division were seen evacuating the burnt corpse of the deceased to the mortuary.

A resident of the area stated that it was an unfortunate occurrence that took the life of a hard-working woman.

He said, “It was unfortunate that the fire claimed the women’s life. I was already asleep but the shout of fire woke me up. But it was difficult to rescue the woman because the fire had already spread to the upper floor of the house.

The cause of the fire was still unknown as of the time of filing this report
