Wolves end nine-man Arsenal’s unbeaten run

Published

Wolves defeated nine-man Arsenal 2-1 at the Molineux on Tuesday night, ending the Gunners’ nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Arsenal who were unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games (W5 D2) took the lead in the first half through a right-footed finish from Nicolas Pépé in the 32nd munited, rewarding the Gunners’ strong start to the game.

Mikel Arteta’s side were however dealt a blow 13 minutes later when David Luiz tripped goal-bound WillianJose to get a straight red card as Wolves were awarded a penalty.

Rúben Neves stepped up to pull the home side level with a stunning spot-kick, sending Arsenal’s Bernd Leno the wrong way as the first half ended 1-1.
Arsenal were caught napping four minutes into the second-half as João Moutinho scored a screamer as he beat Leno from 30 yards out.
Arsenal’s troubles compounded in the 72nd minute when Leno was sent off, reducing Arteta’s squad to nine men with about 20 minutes to go.
Leno rushed out of his box to deal with a long pass in behind but misjudges the bounce of the ball and handles the ball outside of his area, preventing a goalscoring opportunity.
VAR checks conducted on the move did little to help Leno as the decision stood just like the scoreline till the final whistle.
Wolves have now successfully completed their first league double over Arsenal since 1978-79.
Meanwhile, since Luiz signed for Arsenal in August 2019, he has bagged at least three red cards and conceded six penalties.
