Laolu Akande, the spokesman of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has said that Nigerians will not be affected by the recent hike in electricity tariff.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, Akande said that the new tariff will only affect those who experience stable electricity for 12 hours and above.

He made this known in a response to a question on how the suffering of Nigerians would be ameliorated by the Federal Government’s ‘Economic Survival Fund’ amid electricity and fuel price hike.

The Presidential aide said, “Regarding the electricity tariff, majority of Nigerians will not be paying more and I will like to say that again. Regarding the electricity tariff, majority of Nigerians will not be paying more and that is essentially because if you are currently receiving anything below 12 hours of electricity a day, your tariff will not go up.

“If you are being asked to pay more if you are in that category, you need to let us know, you need to go to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s  platform on social media; go to Twitter, go to Facebook and report so that what the President said is enforced.”

He said that the Nigerian government has good intentions with the deregulation of the oil sector which caused an increase in the pump price of petrol.

Akande added that the move will have a long term benefit especially in the area of job creation
