Championship side, West Bromwich Albion, has secured the future of Nigerian goalkeeper Brian Okonkwo after handing the young shot-stopper a new two-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2028.
The younger brother of Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has continued to make steady progress since arriving at The Hawthorns in September 2025. Brian quickly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for West Brom’s Premier League 2 team, producing a series of impressive performances throughout the campaign.
The talented goalkeeper featured 17 times in all competitions last season and was instrumental in helping the club’s U21 side reach the latter stages of the Premier League 2 Cup. His consistent displays convinced the Baggies to reward him with an improved deal that extends his stay for another two years.
Speaking on the club’s official website, Academy Manager Richard Stevens commended Brian’s development and explained why the club believes he has a bright future.
“On Brian, he came into our programme late last season, but he used that time to do a lot of work with Head of Academy Goalkeeping, Phil Smart, and in the first team with Boaz Myhill as well,” Stevens said.
“He’s an important part of our programme and if you look at most goalkeepers, historically, they need more development time, loan moves, opportunities and patience as well.
“Brian made a big impact at the football club and I believe he will benefit from the programme over the coming season.”
Having committed his future to West Bromwich Albion, the highly rated Nigerian goalkeeper will now look to continue his development, build on his impressive displays at youth level and challenge for opportunities with the club’s senior side during the 2026/27 Championship season.
