WC Qualifiers: Calvert-Lewin bags brace as five-star England thump San Marino
European football giants, England, made eased past San Marino with a 5-0 win in their opening World Cup qualifying match.
The Three Lions gave no chances to the visitors by restricting them to just 15.3% of the possession and two shots on target through the encounter.
Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse gave Gareth Southgate’s men the lead in the 14th minute to begin the goal fest.
Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin made it 2-0 in the 21st minute while Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling added to the tally ten minutes later.
England went into the break with a three-goal advantage and Southgate’s men picked up from where they left the game in the first half.
Calvert-Lewin bagged his brace on the night by converting an assist from Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard in the 51st minute to make it 4-0.
England completed their five-star performance with a late goal from the debutant, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins in the 83rd minute after an assist by City’s Phil Foden.
The first three goal were assisted by Chelsea’s trio of Ven Chilwell, Reeves James and Mason Mount respectively.
England top the group on goal difference ahead of second place Albania who edged Andorra 1-0.
Meanwhile Poland and Hungary played a 3-3 draw to stay 3rd and 4th respectively on the log.
Bottom-placed San Marino who are ranked 210th out of 210 by FIFA have won only once – against Liechtenstein in a 2004 friendly since they began playing official matches in 1990.
