The incident occurred on Friday after the bus reportedly struck the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was feared dead. This triggered outrage among residents and passers-by, with many discussing the BRT bus set ablaze in Lagos.
According to The PUNCH, some youths reportedly attacked the bus driver before setting the vehicle on fire. Such acts, including the BRT bus set ablaze in Lagos, highlight ongoing tensions around road safety in the city.
Police officers and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) intervened and rescued the driver from the crowd.
A video circulating on social media showed the BRT bus engulfed in flames as people gathered around the scene. This footage of the BRT bus set ablaze in Lagos quickly spread online.
An X user identified as @kinglammyjames, who shared details of the incident, wrote, “Live at OGOLONTO.
“A bike man was crushed to death by the BRT Bus and in turn, the STREET BOYS burned down the BRT Bus.”
LAMATA confirms crash, reacts to bus destruction
Reacting to the incident, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) confirmed that an accident occurred between a BRT bus and a commercial motorcyclist.
Speaking with The Whistler, LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, said the collision occurred on the dedicated BRT lane.
He alleged that the motorcyclist was riding on the restricted corridor in violation of traffic regulations.
“There was an accident between an Okada rider and the bus, and the bus was burnt in retaliation,” Ojelabi said.
However, the spokesperson could not confirm reports that the motorcyclist died in the crash.
“I don’t have that information,” he said when asked about the reported death.
Ojelabi also expressed concern over the destruction of the bus. He said it would affect commuters who depend on the public transport service.
“It’s going to deprive no fewer than 400 Lagosians the use of that bus on a daily basis,” he said.
Investigation into crash remains unclear
The identity of the motorcyclist and the circumstances that led to the collision had not been officially established as of the time of reporting.
It was also unclear whether the police had arrested anyone in connection with the attack on the driver or the burning of the bus.
Although eyewitness accounts claimed the motorcyclist died, transport authorities had yet to independently confirm the reported fatality.
The incident has renewed concerns about road safety. There are concerns as well about unauthorised use of dedicated BRT lanes and mob violence following traffic accidents in Lagos.
