Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has told the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, that he defeated his political camp following the victory of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, in the August 15 governorship election.
Davido made the comment on Thursday during a meeting between Governor Adeleke and Wike in Abuja.
The meeting took place shortly after the Osun governor had visited President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
In a video showing the encounter, Davido appeared to taunt Wike over the outcome of the Osun election while speaking to the minister.
“I beat you guys. I beat APC,” the singer said.
Wike quickly questioned the claim, asking Davido whether he was the one who personally defeated him at the election.
Davido, according to the video, responded playfully before later prostrating before Wike while laughing.
The two men subsequently hugged each other.
Wike was also heard saying, “You dey hear am.”
The encounter followed Governor Adeleke’s visit to Wike in Abuja as part of his engagements after securing re-election as Osun governor.
A photograph from the meeting was posted on X by Lere Olayinka, Wike’s media aide. The image showed Adeleke and the FCT minister shaking hands while the governor held his certificate of return.
Olayinka captioned the photograph, “Governor Ademola Adeleke visits the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.”
The meeting with Wike came a few hours after Adeleke met with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, where he presented his certificate of return and expressed appreciation to the President for the conduct of the election.
Adeleke arrived at the Villa at about 5:25pm wearing a navy blue traditional outfit and accompanied by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
Other Osun officials later joined the governor, including the Director-General of his Campaign Council, Senator Lere Oyewumi; a member of the council, Sunday Bisi; his Chief of Staff, Akinleye Kazeem; and Bamidele Salam, representing Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Adeleke secured 511,067 votes in the election to defeat the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.
The governor won in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured victory in 11. Accord Party candidate Najeem Salaam came third with 17,180 votes.
The election had 1,010,684 accredited voters out of 2,339,544 registered voters, while 1,005,800 votes were cast. The Independent National Electoral Commission recorded 985,097 valid votes and 20,721 rejected ballots.
Davido had been actively following developments surrounding the election, including the voting process and the collation of results.
During the election period, the singer also called on his uncle to reconsider his support for presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 election.
“No more supporting any presidential candidate @AAdeleke_01 make we Dey our Dey!!!” Davido wrote in a post that was subsequently deleted.
He was also reported to have deleted another post aimed at Tinubu, which read, “U no try @officialABAT.”
The posts generated reactions because Governor Adeleke had publicly endorsed Tinubu for another term in 2027, despite seeking re-election as Osun governor on the platform of the Accord Party.
After winning the election, however, Adeleke reaffirmed his support for Tinubu and commended the President for what he described as his contribution to the credibility of the poll.
“At this point, I must deeply appreciate Mr President, His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his strong support for a free and fair election. Mr President is a son of Osun State, and I hereby reaffirm my earlier endorsement of him for a second term in the 2027 presidential election,” Adeleke said in his acceptance speech.
The governor subsequently clarified that his endorsement of Tinubu was not the result of any political deal between them.
“No, I did not reach an agreement with Mr President,” Adeleke said in an interview with Channels Television.
He said his support was partly influenced by Tinubu’s Yoruba background and the infrastructure projects being undertaken by the Federal Government.
“My support is just based on Mr President being a Yoruba man and his projects. And I believe that all the federal roads that he has started, I want to encourage him not to forget Osun too,” he said.
Adeleke also urged the President to extend federal infrastructure projects to Osun, particularly the construction and rehabilitation of roads linking the state with other parts of the country.
“I feel like, since a Yoruba man has won for the first time, maybe I will give him another chance to develop his reforms,” he added.
The governor further stated that he was prepared to cooperate with political figures supporting Tinubu, irrespective of their party affiliations.
“As long as they say, ‘I’m doing it for Mr President,’ I don’t mind. I will work with them,” Adeleke said.
Despite his backing for Tinubu, Adeleke said he was not considering defecting to the APC at present.
“As I’m talking to you right now, I’m not even thinking about that. It’s not on my agenda,” he said.
Adeleke also linked part of his appreciation for Tinubu to the President’s intervention over an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission restriction on one of the Osun State Government’s accounts.
The EFCC had imposed a Post No Debit restriction on the account while investigating the handling of about N11 billion, including Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and allocations received through the Federation Account Allocation Committee.
The commission also alleged that suspicious transfers were made from the account to several corporate accounts.
Following the election, Adeleke said Tinubu personally contacted him and informed him that the matter had been resolved.
“What else do I want? I’ve instructed my Attorney General to drop it. Mr President has done well; he called me. What more do I want?” Adeleke said.
