Update: Scores injured, building collapses as NNPC pipeline explodes in Lagos [Photos]
Scores of people have been injured following a pipeline explosion in Abule Ado, in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, on Sunday.
The explosion of the pipeline which reportedly belonged to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation [NNPC] had thrown residents of the area into a state of panic.
It was learnt that the impact of the explosion had made some buildings to cave in while residents were still in the building.
As of the time of filing this report, the suspected cause of the explosion, the casualty figure and the number of buildings affected could not be ascertained.
A resident, Aliu Jimoh, said two fire service truck had been drafted to the scene of the explosion but the fire was yet to be put out, adding that scores of people had been injured.
He said,
“There is a problem in Abule Ado right now, a pipeline has exploded and many buildings have collapsed, including a school that is almost two acres. We don’t know if people are in the building or not or if people have died or not but scores of people are injured.
“I have seen two fire service truck going toward the direction of the explosion but the fire is still burning.”
The Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, Nosa Okunbor, said,
“A team is heading to Abule Ado, Trade Fair axis for investigation of the alleged pipeline explosion. Awaiting details and preliminary reports. Please avoid speculations.”
