Ukraine launched hundreds of drones across Russia on Sunday in one of its heaviest aerial assaults of the war, escalating the cycle of Ukraine Russia attacks. Meanwhile, Moscow struck several Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, where a major book market was set ablaze.
According to the Associated Press, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed that 822 Ukrainian drones were destroyed overnight. Moscow authorities said hundreds had been heading towards the Russian capital in the most recent wave of Ukraine Russia attacks.
At least six people were reported killed in Russia. An 83-year-old man died after a drone struck a home in the Moscow region. In addition, five others were killed during attacks in the southwestern Rostov region.
A warehouse belonging to Russian online retail giant Wildberries was also engulfed in flames in Podolsk, south of Moscow. Ukraine has increasingly targeted the company’s facilities, accusing it of supporting Russian military logistics.
Massive drone attack targets Russia
Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov described the assault as one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks on the region. This has happened since the war began, contributing to the frequency of Ukraine Russia attacks over the past year.
Russian officials said several locations were damaged, including sites around Podolsk and Domodedovo, near one of Moscow’s major airports.
In Rostov, authorities said more than 150 drones targeted three towns. The attack damaged homes and a railway station while also triggering a forest fire.
Ukraine has stepped up long-range attacks against Russian infrastructure in recent months. It targeted facilities Ukraine says contribute to Moscow’s military campaign.
Moscow strikes Kyiv book market
Russia simultaneously launched missiles and drones against Ukraine, killing people and damaging infrastructure across several regions. This escalation is a clear part of the ongoing Ukraine Russia attacks happening on both sides.
Two people were killed and 14 injured in a missile strike on Kryvyi Rih. Ukraine’s largest steel producer, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, said parts of its operations were damaged and temporarily halted.
Another person was reported killed in Sumy. Also, a man and woman died after a Russian strike hit their home in the Zaporizhzhia region.
In Kyiv, Russian attacks injured several people and triggered fires across the capital.
One of the most visible scenes of destruction was at a large book market near the Pochaina metro station. Flames tore through kiosks and sent thick smoke into the sky as firefighters battled the blaze.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of continuing to target civilian infrastructure.
Russia, however, said its strikes targeted military-industrial facilities, including a site involved in producing Ukraine’s domestically developed Flamingo missiles.
The latest exchange marks another escalation in the long-running conflict. Both countries are increasingly using long-range weapons to strike targets far beyond the front lines, illustrating the ongoing cycle of Ukraine Russia attacks.
