The Oyo State Police Command has rescued a one-month-old baby girl allegedly sold for N2m, following a complaint lodged by her grandmother.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan.
Ayanlade said the incident occurred in Ido Local Government Area, where the child’s mother allegedly sold her baby through an arrangement involving a health facility operator and another intermediary.
Police investigate alleged baby sale
The investigation began after Mary Amos reported that her 23-year-old daughter had given birth at Ebepraise Health Centre on September 6.
She told investigators that her daughter disappeared with the baby about a week after delivery and subsequently failed to explain the child’s whereabouts.
Police arrested the mother for questioning, during which she allegedly disclosed details of the transaction.
According to the police spokesperson, the mother implicated the owner of the health facility and another person identified as Oludunni in facilitating the sale to a buyer identified as Folawewo.
Investigators reportedly discovered that the mother received N1m from the transaction, while the two alleged facilitators received N500,000 each.
Police confirmed that the baby had been recovered safely.
The command said efforts were continuing to apprehend the alleged buyer and other persons suspected of involvement in the incident.
Ayanlade urged members of the public to report suspected child trafficking cases promptly to security authorities.
The investigation remains ongoing.
