UCL: Liverpool defeat Ajax 1-0 to qualify for knockout stage

Published

Liverpool have made it to the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League after securing a 1-0 win against Ajax on Tuesday night.

The Reds who have been plagued with a number of first-team injuries bounced back from last weeks 2-0 home defeat against Atalanta.

Jurgen Klopp gave Kelleher his European debut in the absence of number one goalkeeper, Alisson who missed out after picking up an injury.

It didn’t take too long before the opponents tested the resolve of Kelleher with Ajax’s Klaassen looking to threaten the home side.

The Dutchman had a big opportunity to put Ajax in front in the 21st minute but his header was saved by Kelleher and would have been ruled for offside it the ball found the back of the net.

Another chance came through Mazraoui who unleashed a 25-yard shot but the Liverpool debutant was forced to a superb save.

Liverpool also had their own chances with five shots on target against Ajax’s four but the deadlock lasted until the second half.

Midfielder, Curtis Jones broke the deadlock in the 58th minute to give the home side the all-important goal after taking advantage of a huge mistake by Onana in the Ajax goal.

The win gives Liverpool their group stage qualification with 12 points on top of Group D, leaving Atalanta and Ajax with eight and seven points in second and third spots respectively.

Danish club side, Midtjylland, languish in fourth position with just one point after securing a point away at Atalanta tonight.

Alexander Scholz’s 13th-minute goal was cancelled by Atalanta’s Cristian Romero who spared the blushes of the home side in the 79th minute.
Atalanta will slug it out with Ajax next week in Holland for the second place with both sides requiring a win to book their place in the round of 16.
