Two dead, others injured in Delta community leadership tussle

Published

Two persons are feared dead with some others seriously wounded just as the police have arrested two suspects in a leadership tussle between two factional groups in Agbarho Community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the incident which occurred late Wednesday evening has caused serious tension in the Community as police operatives are still going about with a view to effect further arrests.

Although the Police in Agbarho Community have deposited the remains of the deceased in the morgue, details as to what caused the crisis and murder of the three persons is still sketchy as at the time of filing in this report.

A source, however, revealed that it might not be unconnected to the fact that one of the factional leaders had presided over the affairs of the Community for the past eight years and had allegedly refused to step down.

It was gathered that he was approached by another factional leader to step down from office to give room for elections to be conducted into the executive positions, but he refused, a development which led to a serious argument between the two factional leaders.

Consequently, sporadic gunshots by their lieutenants rented the air and two persons were shot dead with others wounded in the process as people ran helter skelter for dear life.

When contacted over the incident, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Hafiz Inuwa directed inquisitive journalists to speak with the Area Commander, Ughelli  or the Divisional Police Officer, Agbarho for comments.

“Help me call the DPO, both the Area Commander. They’re the one there. If they refused to cooperate with you, that’s when you will call me and I will answer you”, the CP said.

The Ughelli Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force, ACP Aiki J Moses in a telephone chat with our correspondent advised that the DPO be contacted since he is the person on ground.

“The Agbarho Divisional Police Officer, CSP Etim Anthony however declined comments on the matter even though a Police source who craved anonymity confirmed the report saying “two persons were killed and not three as being speculated”.

“Some persons who were injured are in the hospital. Some arrests have been made and we are still investigating”, the source said while noting that the crisis started over the refusal of a leader who had served for eight years to step down from office.
