Two dead as boat capsizes in Lagos

Two persons lost their lives in a ferry accident at the Ipakodo terminal in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State due to mechanical failure.

The incident, which happened at exactly 7:45 A.M today, June 6, 2022, was confirmed in a press release by the Lagos State Waterways Authority General Manager, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel.

According to LASWA, the 20 passengers ferry boat, carrying 17 passengers at the time of the incident with the name, “R & N 2” capsized less than 200 meters from the terminal.

Emmanuel further revealed that there is an ongoing investigation into the situation.

“The Boat Captain is currently being investigated by the relevant authorities while a full investigation into the cause of this mishap is ongoing as of the time of this press release,” he said.

The Lagos State Emergency Managent also confrimed the accident in a statement released on Wednesday.

“On arrival, it was discovered that a 20 passenger ferry boat carrying 17 passengers named “R & N 2” had capsized due to ma suspected mechanical fault and was rapidly submerged following its departure from the Ipakodo ferry terminal.

“A combined team of Water guards, the search and rescue team of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) andLASEMA Agency responders were mobilized to the scene of the incident, leading to the rescue of 15 persons alive.

“2 adult female passengers were retrieved unconscious and were transferred to the nearest hospital for treatment. They unfortunately never regained consciousness and were later declared dead.

“The Boat Captain is currently being investigated by the relevant authorities while an investigation into the cause of this mishap is being carried out by LASWA.”
