Nigerians on Twitter have called on public office holders and agencies in the country to deactivate their accounts on the microblogging platform.
This comes after the wife of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) who had over a million followers on Twitter, deactivated her account Friday night.
WuzupNigeria reported that Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who had accused Twitter of double standards, announced the suspension of the microblogging site on Friday, citing the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.
Aisha Buhari had disclosed in a tweet posted at 11:59 pm on Friday that, “I will be deactivating my Twitter account for now. Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria,” PUNCH reports.
The deactivation has evoked mixed reactions from Nigerian tweeps. See some of the reactions below;
A tweep, @Iffect_07, said Aisha’s tweet was never put to good use in the first place.
“Her Twitter account was never useful to us in the first place…Good riddance.”
Another tweep, @charlichy tweeted that her presence on the platform was of no use to the common man.
“What has her presence here done for the common man?”
@temmyb86 tweeted that Aisha’s deactivating her account only shows she is a good wife.
“I don’t blame her. She’s only being a good wife. I would expect mine to do the same.”
However, one Twitter user, @sam82926185 wondered how easy it was for her to jump on deactivating her account yet be very quiet when it comes to the insecurity problems in the country.
“That’s where they will see her. The insecurity in the country is none of her business.”
Meanwhile, some tweeps who still had access to the platform, realized that the top government officials, ministers, agencies, and presidential aides were yet to deactivate their Twitter accounts and they endeavored to call them out.
A Tweep, @daisybabyluv1 wondered why the President had not followed in the footsteps of his wife by deactivating his account.
“Her husband’s account should be deactivated already too. What is he waiting for?”
@gaslarry1 wrote that he was waiting for government officials, APC members to deactivate their accounts.
“We are waiting for Buhari, Lai Mohammed, Shehu Garba, Femi Adesina and other APC members to do the same.”
@greatolasoji1 tweeted, “Her husband and his allies in dictatorship should follow the example Aisha Buhari has laid.”
@egb80 tweeted, “The question should be: why has Buhari not deactivated his own? Monitoring spirits everywhere.”
@youbeeismyname tweeted, “Mr Lai should be the first to do so. What is he waiting for? Next should be all social media handles of FGN and serving politicians.”
@rosy23elle tweeted, “All government-related accounts and their media crews should do the same.”
@Danielregha wrote, “All APC members should emulate what Aisha Buhari did and deactivate their Twitter accounts. They should, for once, lead by example since they imposed the law.”
